PSALMS 127:1:
“If the LORD does not build the house, it is useless for the builders to work on it. If the LORD does not protect a city, it is useless for the guard to stay alert.” (GW)
OBSERVATION: What will make America great again? This familiar slogan of the current presidential campaign – “Make America Great Again!” – brings up so many different ideas and considerations. Some believe that if their political party gains power in the three branches of our government – that will make America great again. Others hope for a president that will solve the current economic crisis we have found ourselves in over the past decade. And still others believe that if government assists in giving them everything they need and desire – this will make America great again.
Yet, all of these things fall miserably short. They will never make America great again.
Last night in Weatherford, Texas, many of the local churches and pastors gathered in Heritage Park for the 65th annual National Day of Prayer. I have personally been involved in planning these events in the past, and greatly enjoyed our time of worship, prayer, and intercession. Yet, we have been doing this every year for the past 65 years, and our country has seemingly been on a steady social, moral, and economic decline. I am not diminishing the power of prayer, but I am sensing that our prayers must also be accompanied by something else if we are going to see America become great again.
If you have ever toured our Nations Capitol you will note the history of our faith in God that is etched in stone, recorded in paintings, and boldly displayed in our Capitol’s architecture. There are those who want to hide this heritage. However, an honest treatment of our history cannot deny that our nation was founded on Biblical principles. Our founding fathers, and our first President knew the sobering fact that – “If the Lord does not build the house, it is useless for the builders to work on it. If the Lord does not protect a city, it is useless for the guard to stay alert.”
In a speech written by George Washington on April 30, 1789, given as his Inaugural Address to both houses of Congress, Washington proclaimed –
Note the acknowledgment of the “Invisible Hand“, “providential agency“, “smiles of Heaven“, “eternal rules of order and right which Heaven itself has ordained…“. And lest one might think that George Washington was not referring to the God of the Bible, and our Lord Jesus Christ, note the following personal prayer he wrote form his personal prayer diary
SUNDAY EVENING…
Meeting together for one Annual Day of Prayer can inspire us. However, the only thing that can make America great again is when God’s people begin to live out His Truth every single day of their life. It is when they begin to humbly repent of their sin each day, turn to His Word for guidance in all things, and count the true cost of discipleship.
This is what will make America great again. This is the only thing that can!
Lord, forgive me of my sin this day. May I turn fully to Your Word, be empowered fully by Your Holy Spirit, and choose the path of righteousness as I draw fully upon Your Amazing Grace! Help me do my small part to make America great again!
In Jesus Name!
